Narrowing the Digital Divide in Schools – £45 Million DfE Initiative
The Department for Education (DfE) has announced a strategic £45 million investment to improve digital connectivity in schools and colleges across the UK, aiming to narrow the digital divide.
While the push for digital transformation in education offers significant benefits, many schools lack the infrastructure or budget to fully embrace these advancements, creating disparities in students’ learning experiences. Recognising this, the government has committed to improving school connectivity to ensure no child is left behind, supporting teachers and students in leveraging technology to enhance education.
Reliable technology is crucial for student success. Research indicates that effective use of digital tools can accelerate learning by two to five months. However, many schools still struggle with basic digital foundations. To address this, the government has launched two key initiatives:
- Connectivity Improvements – A £45 million investment, including £25 million for wireless networks and £20 million for fibre upgrades.
- DfE Standards – A long-term plan for all schools to meet six core digital standards by 2030.
Connectivity Improvements: Connect the Classroom
Fast, secure internet is essential for integrating technology into lessons. Yet, the 2023 Technology in Schools Survey found that only 63% of schools have fully functional Wi-Fi throughout their premises. Since 2023, the Connect the Classroom scheme has helped 1.3 million pupils across 3,700 schools by funding connectivity upgrades. The latest phase invests an additional £45 million across 1,000 schools to further enhance infrastructure.
Tel Group has been a trusted supplier for this initiative, securing £2.5 million in funding for 40 schools across England. We look forward to continuing our work in narrowing the digital gap through the latest phase of this programme.
DfE Digital and Technology Standards
Since 2022, the DfE has developed 11 digital and technology standards to guide schools in establishing strong digital foundations. However, while 72% of school IT leads are aware of these standards, only 16% report meeting them. To accelerate progress, the government is now setting a goal for all schools to meet six core standards by 2030:
- Broadband Internet
- Wireless Networks
- Network Switches
- Digital Leadership and Governance
- Filtering and Monitoring
- Cyber Security
Since the introduction of these standards, Tel Group has supported schools in meeting them through strategic IT support packages. We have also developed a free tracker to help schools assess their progress and plan improvements.
The Consultation: Shaping the Future of Digital Education
To refine these initiatives, the government has launched an eight-week consultation to gather insights from educators and technology providers. This consultation aims to shape future policy and ensure all students benefit from digital advancements.
