IT Infrastructure Audit for Schools & MATs
Tel Group’s ICT Infrastructure Audits give school and Trust leaders a clear, evidence-based view of their technology infrastructure. Each audit comes with practical recommendations and a roadmap for improvement.
Our audits will review your school’s current IT Infrastructure Estate, built based on DfE Standards and education best practices, including:
- Broadband and Resilience
- Network Infrastructure (Servers, Cabinets, Switching and Cabling)
- Wireless Network and Heat Mapping
- CCTV and Door Access Control
- Lockdown and Emergency Communication
- Classroom Audio Visual Equipment
From there, we can develop a fully costed roadmap and support the implementation of the recommended improvements and upgrades required to enhance your school’s infrastructure.
Understand Your School’s IT Infrastructure Estate
School & MAT IT Infrastructure Audit
School infrastructure rarely follows a single plan. Equipment is added as budgets allow and temporary fixes become permanent. Over time this leaves hidden weaknesses, such as outdated cabling, patchy Wi-Fi, ageing switches, CCTV blind spots and single points of failure. These often go unnoticed until they cause disruption.
An ICT Infrastructure Audit replaces assumptions with evidence, assessing your infrastructure against DfE standards and recognised best practice for education. Each school gets a clear RAG rated overview, and we recommend costed improvements for the gaps we find.
Tel Group can then build your improvement roadmap and deliver the upgrades, so you have one partner from assessment to completion.

A Complete Review of Your School’s Infrastructure
Broadband and Resilience
We review primary and backup connections, speeds, failover and power resilience to confirm you can keep essential services running.
Network Infrastructure
We assess cabling, cabinets, switches and backbone connections to find bottlenecks, end-of-life equipment and single points of failure.
Wireless and Heat Mapping
We map Wi-Fi coverage and signal strength across your site to show where access points are underperforming or missing.
CCTV and Door Access Control
We document camera and door access control coverage to identify blind spots, faulty equipment and gaps in perimeter security.
Lockdown and Emergency Communication
We review how you would alert staff and pupils during a lockdown or invacuation, and where coverage needs improving.
Classroom Audio Visual
We check the condition, safety and installation of interactive boards and displays to support replacement planning.
How It Works:
1. Initial Consultation
We meet virtually to discuss your sites, current concerns and priorities, and agree the scope of the audit, identifying if there’s any additional areas you want to explore.
3. RAG Rated Report
You’ll receive a RAG rated PDF report showing what’s working well, where improvements are needed and how you measure up against standards. Our recommendations are backed by site maps and coverage analysis.
2. On-Site Survey
Our engineers visit each site to carry out a detailed survey of your existing infrastructure. This can be conducted within or outside school hours, with no disruption to the school day.
4. Recommendations
We present our findings and recommendations to your leadership team, with the reasoning, timelines and estimated costs for each (if required). From there, we can build a full implementation roadmap together, based on priorities and budgets.
What You’ll Receive
Every audit produces clear, visual evidence your leadership team can act on.
- A detailed infrastructure report: an executive summary, RAG rated findings and detailed observations for each area
- Assessment against guidance: how your infrastructure aligns with DfE standards, KCSIE and education best practice
- Visual evidence: site photographs, Wi-Fi heat maps, coverage plans and proposed locations for new equipment
- Costed recommendations: practical improvements with the reasoning, suggested timelines and estimated costs for each
- A prioritised improvement plan: quick wins, urgent actions and longer-term strategic projects
- A leadership presentation: a summary deck for senior leaders, trustees and governors
Built for Schools and Trusts
For Individual Schools
Get a clear picture of your site’s infrastructure and a prioritised plan that fits your budget. The audit gives you the evidence to support funding bids, procurement decisions and conversations with governors.
For Multi-Academy Trusts
We survey every school in your Trust using the same assessment and RAG rating process. That lets you compare sites, spot common weaknesses, prioritise high-risk schools and plan phased investment.
Supporting the DfE Digital and Technology Standards
The Department for Education advises schools and colleges to work towards meeting its core digital and technology standards by 2030. Our audits directly assess several of these areas, including broadband, wireless networks, network switching and cabling.
CCTV, door access, lockdown systems and audio visual equipment are reviewed against their intended purpose, relevant good practice and KCSIE responsibilities.
Want the full picture? This audit can be upgraded to a complete DfE Digital and Technology Standards Audit. We’ll add analysis of the remaining standards to your report, giving you a single view of where you stand.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
How long does an audit take?
Typically 1 day per site, depending on the size of the school and the areas included.
-
Will the survey disrupt teaching?
Our engineers plan their visit around the school day and work with your site team to keep disruption to a minimum.
-
Do we need to include every area?
No. Audits can be tailored to the areas that matter most to your school, from a single Wi-Fi assessment to a full infrastructure review.
-
When will I receive the findings?
The team will discuss with you the estimated completion date, depending on site size. We will then book in a meeting date to present the findings.
-
Do we have to use Tel Group for the improvements?
No. The report is yours to use however you choose, including for procurement with other suppliers.
-
Can the report support funding bids?
Yes. The report’s evidence base and costed recommendations help support budget planning, funding applications and Invitation to Tender (ITT) Packs.
-
How much does an audit cost?
