The DfE’s Connect the Classroom Scheme returns with a further £45 Million Investment
The Department for Education (DfE) is investing an additional £45 million to improve school connectivity, expanding the Connect the Classroom scheme to another 1,000 schools.
Reliable digital infrastructure is essential for bridging the digital divide in education. When used effectively, technology enhances learning, supports students with additional needs, and develops key digital skills. However, many schools still struggle with poor connectivity, weak security, and a lack of digital confidence, leaving some students at a disadvantage.
Connect the Classroom Scheme – Connectivity Funding
Fast, secure internet is vital for integrating technology into lessons, yet the 2023 Technology in Schools Survey found that only 63% of schools have fully functional Wi-Fi. Since 2023, the DfE’s Connect the Classroom scheme has improved connectivity for 1.3 million pupils across 3,700 schools by funding essential upgrades.
The latest phase adds another £45 million to further strengthen school infrastructure, including:
- £20 million to complete fibre upgrades.
- £25 million to upgrade wireless networks.
Since the Connect the Classroom scheme started, Tel Group has secured £2.5 million in funding for 40 schools across England. We are committed to closing the digital gap and supporting even more schools in this latest phase.
Government Initiatives – Breaking Down the Digital Divide
Improving connectivity is just one part of the government’s broader vision to future-proof education. The DfE has developed 11 Digital and Technology Standards, which schools are encouraged to follow. However, only 16% of schools currently meet them, highlighting the need for clearer guidance and accountability.
To accelerate progress, the government is making six of these standards mandatory by 2030, ensuring schools have the essential digital foundations needed for effective teaching and administration.
