The DfE’s Push for Schools to Meet Six Core Digital Standards by 2030
The Department for Education (DfE) has announced plans to hold schools and colleges accountable for meeting six core Digital and Technology Standards by 2030.
The long-term goal to ensure schools are meeting 6 of their core standards is part of the government’s broader effort to enhance digital infrastructure and close the digital divide, ensuring all students have equal access to technology-driven learning.
Since 2022, the DfE has developed 11 Digital and Technology Standards, which schools are encouraged to meet. These standards provide a benchmark for progress, yet they remain non-mandatory. While 72% of school IT leads are aware of these standards, only 16% of schools report meeting them. This gap highlights the need for greater accountability and a more structured approach to digital transformation.
To accelerate progress, the government is now working towards making six of these standards a requirement for all schools by 2030. This step aims to ensure that schools have the fundamental infrastructure needed to integrate technology effectively into teaching and administration.
The Six Core Standards
These six core standards focus on building reliable, secure, and well-governed digital environments:
📶 Broadband Internet
📡 Wireless Networks
🔌 Network Switches
👩💻 Digital Leadership and Governance
🔍 Filtering and Monitoring
🛡️ Cyber Security
Why These Standards Matter
Meeting these standards is critical for student success. Research shows that effective use of technology can accelerate learning by up to five months. However, many schools still struggle with unreliable Wi-Fi, outdated infrastructure, and weak cyber security, creating disparities in learning experiences.
By addressing these challenges, the DfE’s core standards will provide schools with a clear roadmap to digital resilience, ensuring seamless technology integration across classrooms and administration.
Government Initiatives
The push for digital transformation is part of the government’s wider plan to improve school connectivity and IT infrastructure:
- Connectivity Funding – A £45 million investment, including £25 million for wireless network upgrades and £20 million for fibre installations (via the Connect the Classroom initiative).
- DfE Digital Standards – A long-term plan for all schools to meet six core digital standards by 2030.
These initiatives aim to ensure that every school has the digital foundations needed to support modern teaching and learning.
Our Role in Helping to Achieve These Standards
As schools work towards meeting these standards, expert guidance and IT support will be essential. This is where companies like Tel Group play a key role. Through strategic IT support, infrastructure upgrades, and cyber security solutions, Tel Group helps schools:
- Meet the DfE’s digital standards
- Enhance network security and connectivity
- Future-proof their technology investments
Our team has created a DfE Digital Standards Tracker Template to help you benchmark your progress in meeting these standards and plan effectively for achieving them.
Looking Ahead
The DfE’s commitment to improving digital infrastructure is a significant step towards a fairer education system. With the right resources and expert guidance, schools will meet these standards and be empowered to fully embrace the potential of technology, transforming education for future generations.
